    Signs of Spring Open Day is nearly here!

    Join us this Saturday, 13 April, for our first Open Day of the year with some added springtime fun! Follow a trail, have a go at crafts, and explore the house and garden. Find out how to use natural dyes to colour eggs for Easter with our take-home worksheet.

    Experience how John Croke, a Coventry narrow-loom weaver and his family would have lived and worked including a full-size replica of a medieval loom (Please note the solar room containing the loom is accessed by ladder). Explore the working medieval garden showing the plants that would have been grown for food, flavouring, medicine and household use.

    As always, entry is free! We’ll be open from 11am until 4pm.

    Tea, coffee and homemade cakes are served on Open Days.

    Our June Open day is over  but there’s another chance to look around the house on our Reduced Open Day on 8 July whilst we also attend the Lives and Times tent at the Godiva Festival.

    Early local history brought to life at this unique site, featuring a guest appearance by the Weavers’ Workshop!

    This event features our Weaver’s House trustee Dr. Nat Alcock. It is being organised by Medieval Coventry who did the laser scanning in Spon Street last year.

  • Halloween – longer nights, darkness and lights

    Halloween – longer nights, darkness and lights

    October – misty mornings, nights drawing in, preparation for winter and the year coming to a close. Before that – Halloween. Tricks, treats, fancy dress and ghost stories. What would have a medieval weaver made of this time of year? Halloween in its modern incarnation would seem a world apart although the festival has its roots in antiquity and would have been known to medieval people as All Hallow’s Eve.

    Trick or Treat is particularly regarded as a recent American import but has its origins in the UK in the centuries-old practice of ‘guising’ and ‘soul-caking’ which would have been traditions then taken over to the U.S. (We had to get a cake reference in of course). It’s very difficult to pin down the exact origins of our Halloween traditions, but autumn-timed festivals around the world include aspects we recognise in Halloween, final harvesting, fires and lights, celebration of the dead.

    It’s naturally a good time for coming inside, lighting the lights, gathering together and telling stories – so with that in mind, here is a selection of some of the things you can enjoy this Halloween season in Coventry:
