Heritage Open Days- a successful close to our 2022 season

The Weaver’s House took part in this year’s Heritage Open Days with house and garden open for visitors to hear talks on the history of the building. Our volunteers put together some extra features for the yearly festival of heritage.

A fresh batch of research by family history students on Coventry’s own electrical engineering innovators, The Glover Brothers, has revealed more fascinating facts about their lives and their inventions. The brothers have a connection to the terrace having at one point worked out of the old stable of the Black Swan Inn. This new research carried out by Weaver’s House trustee Peterson Cobbett’s students was made into a presentation, especially to link in with this year’s Heritage Open Day theme of Astounding
    Inventions.

Weaver and Dyer Sara Maycock was on site with a display of naturally dyed textiles, alongside a display of the traditional craft of spinning wool. Textile tutor Jane Cobbett exhibited an early Victorian coverlet and was on hand to discuss details of the research and work that went into recreating the original piece.

Visitors enjoyed a sunny day and a selection of home-baked cookies!

“Big thanks to the Trust and all involved with this Coventry gem”
“Loved it. Really interesting. Volunteers made it!”
        “It’s very authentic”

The Open Days will return in 2023, privately booked group tours are still available out of the Open Day season.

Keep in touch through the winter to find out when the house reopens via the social channels @weavershouse (Twitter) WeaversHouseCoventry (Facebook) and theweavershouse (Instagram).

  • A fantastic July Open Day

    A fantastic July Open Day

Thanks to all our volunteers and visitors for giving us an Open Day to remember, a beautiful sunny day, lots of visitors – it was great to see the place buzzing with enthusiasm. We were also joined by Sketch Coventry who captured the site in a range of media. The garden was looking stunning – there’s still time to come and see it for our August and September Open Days.

  • Flashback to fifteen years ago

    Flashback to fifteen years ago

Fifteen years ago today The Weaver’s House was looking rather different (although it was well on the way to restoration). Here’s some photos from then and now.

Some more photos of the garden site before we added all the beds and the wooden shelter at the top of the garden, and the view in 2022.

Below, the garden as it appears today.

If you would like to come and see the transformed site for yourself, we have regular Open Days.

  • The Great British Dig comes to Coventry

The Great British Dig comes to Coventry

Last summer The Weaver’s House volunteers welcomed presenters Hugh Dennis and Christine Carr, a food historian, plus a film crew for The Great British Dig.

Pottage (a type of thick soup) was made using a variety of ingredients including some sorrel from the garden. During the filming, Christine revealed a fact about the medieval traditions of fish eating which took place every Friday. Apparently, this included anything which lived in or on the water so extending the scope of ‘fish’ to include ducks and even otters! The programme will be shown in the springtime – so stay tuned!

You can come and see the garden for yourself at our 2022 Open Days at the house which begin on Saturday 9 April. Our Open Days run throughout the spring and summer seasons and include Heritage Open Days in September.

  • Happy New Year!

August and September Open Days are GO!

We’re so pleased that our first Open Day of 2021 went well, and are delighted that we are also able to open up for further days, including the fantastic Heritage Open Days in Coventry.

The Weaver’s House will next be open on Saturday 21st August 2021. This will be free to visit and will feature the ‘rub a bug’ brass rubbing type activity for children which was very popular last time we included it. There will also be some Medieval games to try.

The house will then reopen for Heritage Open Days on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th September, 2021.

For all of these, the opening times will be 10am until 4pm. All are free entry.

The lower part of The Weaver’s House will be open to visit in small groups, and the garden will be open, and still looking lovely at this time of the year.

Please be aware the small ‘solar’ working room which contains the loom will not be open, and we are not opening the tea room this year. Masks are recommended for the indoor areas as these are small spaces.

Please check back here or with us on social media for up to date details as things may change as has been the case during recent times. For full details please see our Open Day and FAQ page here.

  • Happy Easter

We’re very much missing welcoming visitors into our little medieval house and garden. Usually this time of year we have held the first, springtime themed Open Day of the year. Looking back through the years, we have often been blessed with sunshine. We’re hoping to reopen later this year but here’s a little look back at some springtime Open Days past.

  • Fun in the sun for August Open Day

Fun in the sun for August Open Day

August saw another successful Open Day at The Weaver’s House and we had sunshine all day!

Young visitors enjoyed making woolly snails, weaving and “rub-a-bug” a specially created activity akin to brass rubbing, featuring all kinds of mini-beasts.

There were visitors from across the world including Bolivia, Poland and Italy, across the UK from Cambridge, Leicester and Liverpool and from nearer to home from Kenilworth, Southam, Leamington, Birmingham and of course Coventry!

We had some lovely visitor comments:

“Loved it so much, will be back with my friend in September”
“Maureen and Janet were brilliant tour guides. Really enjoyed visit and learned a lot”
“The activities were good” – Aden and Aimee (young visitors)
“We enjoyed every minute. It was a wonderful day and we met lovely people. Thank you”

What fantastic comments! Thank you to everyone who came along. We didn’t get any photos ourselves this time, we’d love to see your pics.

A brief reminder that this was the last of our regular Open Days for 2019, however as usual we will be taking part in Heritage Open Days in September. There are lots of fantastic venues opening in Coventry, so do plan your visit to maximise on what’s available! We will be open during both weekends of the national heritage festival, full details are here.
