A busy September rounds off 2024’s Open Days

The Weaver’s House volunteers have had a busy month taking part in an off-site event at Fargo Village in the form of the River Festival 2024 and an on-site event with Heritage Open Days.

The River Festival included guided walks, theatre, music and more and The Weaver’s House were joined by The Weavers’ Workshop and the Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, to represent the link to the River Sherbourne and the traditional textile industries.

The river itself runs very close to The Weaver’s House house itself and can be seen just a few minutes’ walk away where it flows under the Spon Bridge at the top of Upper Spon Street. Which brings us to the theme of Heritage Open Days which for 2024 was ‘Routes’, appropriate for the little house which stands on one of the most historic streets in Coventry, a route into the city for hundreds of years, even though it is now cut in two by the ring road. Heritage Open Days was the final public opening this year and saw a steady stream of visitors enjoying cake, history and some sunshine!

  • Celebrating our city’s heritage

    Celebrating our city’s heritage

A blazingly hot weekend for the start of Heritage Open Days in Coventry saw a surprising number of visitors heading to The Weaver’s House and surprisingly, the hot drinks were as popular as ever! One of the times when the coolness of the old buildings are particularly welcome.

Spinning demonstrations were running in the garden in the shade and some younger visitors even had a go at this very traditional craft. When you go through the process to spin your own bit of wool you realise how long it must have taken to produce cloth.

Volunteers decamped to the beautiful surroundings of Drapers’ Hall for the final day of the Heritage festival, to take part in an exhibition of local groups. It was a great opportunity to see other organisations from across the city gathered together to acknowledge all that is achieved to preserve and celebrate Coventry’s history, culture and heritage. Thanks to Coventry Society who organised it, and to Drapers’ Hall for the stunning surroundings.

Open Days are now finished for this year and will restart in the springtime. In the meantime, group tours can be booked subject to availability of volunteers. Full details are at https://theweavershouse.org/group-visits-and-talks

  • Heritage Open Days- a successful close to our 2022 season

Heritage Open Days- a successful close to our 2022 season

The Weaver’s House took part in this year’s Heritage Open Days with house and garden open for visitors to hear talks on the history of the building. Our volunteers put together some extra features for the yearly festival of heritage.

A fresh batch of research by family history students on Coventry’s own electrical engineering innovators, The Glover Brothers, has revealed more fascinating facts about their lives and their inventions. The brothers have a connection to the terrace having at one point worked out of the old stable of the Black Swan Inn. This new research carried out by Weaver’s House trustee Peterson Cobbett’s students was made into a presentation, especially to link in with this year’s Heritage Open Day theme of Astounding
    Inventions.

Weaver and Dyer Sara Maycock was on site with a display of naturally dyed textiles, alongside a display of the traditional craft of spinning wool. Textile tutor Jane Cobbett exhibited an early Victorian coverlet and was on hand to discuss details of the research and work that went into recreating the original piece.

Visitors enjoyed a sunny day and a selection of home-baked cookies!

“Big thanks to the Trust and all involved with this Coventry gem”
“Loved it. Really interesting. Volunteers made it!”
        “It’s very authentic”

The Open Days will return in 2023, privately booked group tours are still available out of the Open Day season.

Keep in touch through the winter to find out when the house reopens via the social channels @weavershouse (Twitter) WeaversHouseCoventry (Facebook) and theweavershouse (Instagram).

  • That was Heritage Open Days 2021

That was Heritage Open Days 2021

    “Lovely garden,
    knowledgeable volunteers,
    couldn’t ask for more”

Thanks to David of Leamington Spa who left that particular comment for last weekend, and indeed, it sums up the weekend most aptly. We weren’t sure how the weekend would go, it was our first Heritage Open Days in two years. However we had a steady stream of visitors over the two days, rather quieter than in previous years but given the ongoing situation, just right. Thanks go to our volunteers who provided the same high quality experience as ever, and now, in costume!

Volunteers greet our very first visitor of the weekend. The costumes were made by our Chair and Volunteers Co-ordinator, Tina.

We were lucky with the weather, the garden looked lovely, and the spinners and weavers provided demonstrations throughout the weekend.

We had some lovely comments, not only recorded in our Visitors’ Book but via social media:

“Thank you for a lovely tour.  Your volunteers are wonderful and knowledgeable.”

“Really interesting to visit this morning. Thank you.”

“I can highly recommend it. A hidden gem just a short walk from the city centre.”

“I loved to hear about the story of the houses there, and my weaver son could have a go on a loom. It was worth visiting.”

That concluded our Open Days for this year. We hope to be open much more for 2022 – let’s raise a cup to that!

  • No Open Days during 2020

    No Open Days during 2020

After careful consideration we have decided to cancel all Open Days for the rest of 2020 due to the difficulties caused by  Covid-19. We are a small, volunteer-run site and are not able to make Open Days workable under the current conditions. This decision cancels the usual Heritage Opening Days as well.

We are disappointed not to be able to welcome visitors during this year, and look forward to reopening in 2021.

  • That was 2019 at The Weaver’s House

That was 2019 at The Weaver’s House

What a busy year it has been for The Weaver’s House. This is the first year that we have had a special theme for every Open Day. Let’s take a whistle-stop tour…

It doesn’t seem a blink of an eye since we began the open season with Signs of Spring, on a sunny April day. A few weeks later, we had an extremely memorable day as reenactor group Coventry Militia brought expertise, costumes and weaponry for an authentic historical experience and some exciting medieval action! We are hoping they will join us for a future Open Day.

June and July delved into delicacies and dirt respectively, with Open Days on Tudor cooking and an archaeological dig. The Tudor recipes included Pease Pottage which visitors sampled on tiny trenchers (bread plates), and mostly declared that it was better than they expected! Coventry And District Archaeological Society (CADAS) ran the on-site dig for July, which unearthed finds including medieval pottery and later dated items such as glass, animal bones and pipe bowl/stem.

August brought a day of Summer Fun in the Garden. Young visitors enjoyed making woolly snails, weaving and “rub-a-bug” a brass rubbing style activity, featuring mini-beasts.

Before we knew it, it was September, and the annual festival of Heritage Open Days, this year celebrating its 25th anniversary. Back in the 90s it was just a single day. It runs across nearly two weeks now, and we opened for both weekends.

This year, the first Saturday coincided with the Spon Spun Arts and Heritage Trail, with the house hosting artwork by Karen Rose Textiles, marking the connection between weaving and the nearby river Sherbourne. This work is currently displayed at the Healing Arts Gallery at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire. During the second weekend, we celebrated the centenary of the birth of previous resident, Sid O’ Neil, with his descendants. Of course, we had cake!

Thanks to the skills of the Weavers’ Workshop, throughout September the window of The Weaver’s House was turned gold, along with most of Earlsdon, in tribute to Ben Crowther.

Although Open Day season ended in September, the house was open in October and November this year for Coventry Biennial. Three artworks were brought together to explore weaving as a historic and contemporary practice which is undertaken in almost every community across the globe. The exhibition closed in late November, ending our public openings for this year.

We also had some private groups in of course, including the Design Nation project and visitors with ancestors connected to the area.

What a busy year! We have next year’s dates in the diary and once we have finalised a few details, we’ll be listing them here very soon! We always welcome new volunteers, so if you have an interest in heritage, Coventry history, gardening or would just like to get involved, find out more here.

  • Heritage Open Days and a special occasion are the perfect close to the season

Heritage Open Days and a special occasion are the perfect close to the season

This year, we’ve celebrated the fact that Heritage Open Days is 25 years old! The increasing success of the festival is a great sign of a healthy interest in heritage. And for the final weekend of Heritage Open Days, we also celebrated the centenary of one of the house’s previous residents.

Sid O’ Neil lived in The Weaver’s House itself during the early twentieth century. His descendant, Clare, is one of the current volunteers and she organised this special celebration to mark the hundredth anniversary of his birth.

poster of old photos of Sid O' Neil and family

We had some cakes and balloons to mark the occasion, but one thing we weren’t expecting was a rather special happening… In 1929 a ten-year-old Sid O’Neil went to school and played with neighbour Fred Golby. Ninety years later Sid’s son Terry and Fred’s son and daughter, Eric and Carol, met for the very first time at the terrace where their dads lived. Family history in real time!

Alongside Sid’s birthday celebrations, we also had tours, tea, cake and sunshine to enjoy the garden.

A big thank you to everyone who has come to our events and supported us this year.
